Responsibilities

Product Development Engineer - Forestry is responsible for all product innovations, developments and cost out activities related to the segment & site complying with customer requirements and maintain the leading position in the market.

 

The PD Engineer Forestry function is to lead the product innovations and developments for the Forestry segment related to Aberdare production facility. The work will support the sales growth of the enterprise by solving customer issues and maintaining productivity and cost competitiveness in the marketplace. Working within the commercial team on agreed priorities that have clear business rationale and value. All developments will require close cooperation with all business functions especially operations, quality and procurement.

 

1.     Leading and executing development of new &/or improved products based on research, new technologies and customer needs from concept to commercialization. Calculates the technical and commercial feasibility of new products and leads BOCAs (Business Opportunity Case Assessments) preparation and approval, in close cooperation with operations, key account managers and marketing. 2.     Following BOCA approval, undertakes planning, management, execution and reporting of new product trials in close cooperation with operations team especially procurement (raw materials), process engineering, quality and production.

3.     Evaluates enquiries and new specifications through prototypes, tests and validation. (Essential)

4.     Assesses safety risks (created by new developments) from BOCA preparation and manages any identified risks in close cooperation with EHS manager so the trials are conducted in a safe manner. Ensure that any new products are transferred to operations with mitigation (ideally elimination) of any safety concerns.

5.     Supports the commercial team to ensure successful product launch. (Essential)

6.     Provides information and support regarding: (Essential)

-        R&D and sales presentations.

-        Development of R&D strategy and plans.

-        Patent protection.

-        R&D administration and reporting.

-        R&D with external partners.

7.     Suggest product changes based on customer needs and market surveys. (Essential)

8.     Develops specifications for new products in close cooperation with operations, including appropriate testing and frequency with the Quality Manager and process alignment with process engineers.

9.     Develops & maintains strong relationships with key customers, suppliers, universities, external laboratories and other stakeholders.

10.  Proactively work as advisor and support role for process and cost optimization activities led by Operations.

11.  Plans and conducts specific lab & literature bench marking studies on competitor products in order to develop knowledge, demonstrate product differentiation and identify opportunities for product development &/or improvement.

12.  Pro-actively searches, changes and implements new technologies or combinations of existing technologies for product innovation and development.

13.  Searches for new raw materials and combines these with existing technologies for product innovation and development.

14.  Manages the introduction and qualification of new raw materials including regulatory activities to gain product safety approval, definition of specifications in close cooperation with Operations, including appropriate testing and frequency with the Quality Manager. Note - changing exactly the same type of material sourced from different suppliers is not considered new raw materials.

15.  Support the commercial team in building technical relationships at designated key accounts (customers) with the aim of finding opportunities to increase share of wallet.

 

This us a site based (Aberdare, CF44 6DA) role with some travel.

Qualifications

Education (Degree/Major)

Bachelor’s degree (Science based preferably polymer chemistry)

 

Certifications

No specific certifications required

 

Work Experience (Ideal but not essential)

  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Experience in extrusion
  • Demonstrated capability to conceive, plan and execute major development projects.

 

Language,

English (both verbal and written)

High level of computer literacy required
