Responsibilities

The Spotter is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers and containers within the manufacturing plant yard. This position plays a key role in supporting shipping, receiving, and production operations by ensuring timely trailer placement, accurate documentation, and coordination with warehouse and transportation teams.

Safely operate yard truck (spotter truck, yard tractor, or jockey truck) to move trailers to and from dock doors, staging areas, and parking zones.

  • Coordinate with shipping and receiving teams to position trailers for loading and unloading based on production schedules.
  • Inspect trailers before and after movement to ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness for use.
  • Maintain accurate trailer inventory and yard organization, ensuring all equipment is properly logged and positioned.
  • Communicate trailer moves and yard status via radio, yard management system, or other communication tools.
  • Assist with trailer hookups, chocking wheels, and securing loads as required.
  • Perform basic equipment checks and report mechanical issues or safety hazards immediately.
  • Support warehouse operations as needed, which may include assisting in loading/unloading or other logistics duties during downtime.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific yard procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of yard jockey, truck driver, or material handling experience in a manufacturing or warehouse environment.
  • CDL (Class A or B) preferred but not required, depending on site requirements.
  • COMPETENCIES:

    • Strong understanding of yard operations, trailer spotting, and dock safety.
    • Ability to operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
    • Excellent communication and time management skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Work is primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to various weather conditions.

     

    EFFORT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Ability to climb in and out of trucks frequently throughout the shift.
    • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the workday.
